Belize: Central America’s Hidden Gem

March 7th, 2010

I recently packed my bags again for the tropics - this time my destination was Belize.  It’s a country I’ve been wanting to visit for many years, so I was thrilled to finalize my plans to travel there with my husband.  The allure of Belize makes perfect sense to me.  Where else can a traveler do so much in such a small country?  Belize offers numerous, colorful coastal towns boasting white sand, pretty water and some of the best snorkeling and diving in the world.  Catch a ride inland and in less than two hours, you’ll find yourself immersed in a tropical jungle providing an endless of array of activities for the more adventurous traveler.

img_2936

In addition to being a short flight from the East Coast, Belize is the only English speaking country in Central America.  These two facts make it a breeze to visit!  I also found the people to be incredibly friendly and helpful.  They are proud of their beautiful nation and eager to share its treasures with visitors.

img_2926

I began my week in bustling Ambergris Caye on the Caribbean coast.   If you want to snorkel or dive, this is the place to be.  Belize boasts the 2nd longest barrier reef in the world (the only one bigger is the Great Barrier Reef in Australia), and it’s unbelievably accessible.  A five minute boat ride from shore puts you at the edge of the reef, and sealife is abundant.  I’ve snorkeled quite a bit in the past but decided I couldn’t visit Belize without trying scuba diving for the first time.  It is the ideal place to learn.  We started out in water only knee-deep and before I knew it, I was swimming alongside spotted eagle rays, tarpon, nurse sharks and too many colorful fish to name.

img_2901

Victoria House offers the most luxurious accommodations on Ambergris Caye, and it’s easy to understand why the resort’s reputation is so wonderful once you’ve stayed there. The rooms, grounds, staff, service and food were fantastic.

img_28621

I was particularly fond of the beach area at the resort, which was dotted with numerous palm trees and was raked regularly.  Visitors should know that Ambergris Caye doesn’t have big stretches of sand, but the water is gorgeous and Victoria House’s beach area was the nicest on the island.

img_2876

After enjoying a few days of fun on the coast, we traveled two hours west for the next part of our trip - a jungle adventure.  Along the way, we stopped at the Belize Zoo, which sits on 29 acres and currently exhibits over 125 animals all native to Belize.  I was fascinated by the exotic creatures living there in such a natural setting, and was particularly fond of “Junior,” the zoo’s most famous jaguar resident.

img_2947

Our choice of accommodations in the jungle was Chaa Creek, arguably the most luxurious and well managed lodge in the country.  It’s part of a 365-acre nature reserve set along the banks of the Macal River in the foothills of the Maya Mountains.  The owners, Mick and Lucy Fleming, have painstakingly built ChaaCreek from the ground up over the past 30 years.  Every aspect of the resort has been carefully thought out and well executed.

img_2964

The room options are varied and full of charm.  There are 23 palm-thatched cottage rooms from which to choose, all of which are beautifully decorated with local furniture and artwork.  I loved the treetop suites, particularly because they offer jacuzzis situated on balconies overlooking the river.

img_2960

In addition to the wonderful accommodations, Chaa Creek ’s food, service and spa exceeded expectations.  The Flemings have recently added an infinity pool, where guests can relax in the sun andwatch the abundant tropical birds which can be found all over the reserve.  I enjoyed breakfast one morning alongside a flock of toucans eating the berries of a palm tree nearby.

img_2966

But one doesn’t come to Chaa Creek just for the rooms and food.  The reserve and surrounding area offers an vast array of activities for visitors of all ages.  A dedicated concierge stays very busy throughout the day as he explains all of the different options to the newly arriving guests and then coordinates their excursions.  Hiking, canoeing, bird-watching, visiting Mayan ruins, cave tubing, horseback riding, and mountain biking are just a few of the endless possibilities.

img_3008

My husband and I chose to visit Xunantunich, a Mayan ruin site, for our first excursion.  It was absolutely fantastic!  There were no crowds, and the structures were truly amazing.  The highlight was a climb to the top of El Castillo, where we were rewarded with lovely views of the countryside from the top of the main temple.

img_2979

On our last day in Belize, I went on the adventure of a lifetime (or at least my lifetime!).  Because I was going to be crawling inside a big, dark cave for several hours, it took a little persuasion for me to agree to visit Actun Tunichil Muknal (more commonly referred to as the “ATM”), one of the  most impressive caves in the Maya region.  But I’m so glad I put my hesitation aside!

img_3010

Our  guide drove us to the edge of a jungle 90 minutes away from Chaa Creek, where we began our one mile hike to the cave.  After crossing three rivers by foot, we arrived at the cave, which honestly looks like something out of an Indiana Jones movie.  All total, we explored the inside of ATM for over three hours, climbing huge rocks, squeezing into tight spaces, and wading through the water.  It was an experience I will never forget.

img_3014

This excursion is not for the faint of heart.  Upon arrival at the cave, you have to swim to get inside.  The water was over my head, and the encroaching darkness was definitely a little intimidating.  Once we got inside and turned on our headlamps, however, I was speechless.  The vast caverns and rock formations were stunningly beautiful.  Even more impressive were the hundreds of Mayan artifacts which literally littered the cave.  ATM was used as a ceremonial site by the Mayans for over 700 years, and most everything left behind remains in its original location.  Vessels of all sizes, fire pits, and the occasional human remains can be found in the cave.  The highlight of the tour is located in a dry chamber deep inside the cave, where the skeleton of a young woman is embedded in the rock.  This famed crystallized maiden, who was sacrificed to the gods,  provides a fascinating glimpse of life during Mayan times.

img_3017

If you like the idea of visiting a tropical paradise with both beaches and jungles, as well as warm and inviting people, then Belize may be your ideal destination.  Another big benefit is the relatively low cost of traveling there, especially when compared to the high season rates currently being charged on most of the other Caribbean islands during the winter.

The Greenbrier: A Winter Wonderland

December 26th, 2009

It started with an ominous weather forecast.  Snow, snow, and more snow!  Not to be deterred from accepting a gracious invitation to experience firsthand the elegance and luxury of The Greenbrier, I made my way into the mountains of West Virginia for what promised to be a weekend to remember.
img_2672
My husband and I were just one hour away from the resort when the snow started to fall, and before we knew it, a full-blown, pre-Christmas blizzard was upon us!  We fortunately made it safely and realized later that evening just how lucky we had been to arrive when we did, as conditions quickly worsened throughout the afternoon, making it virtually impossible for those behind us to reach the resort until the next day.  Before it was all over, almost two feet of snow had fallen!

img_2681

Located in White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia, The Greenbrier has it all - gorgeous architecture, uniquely beautiful interior design, fantastic dining, a first class spa, endless activities for guests of all ages, and truly exceptional service.  The impeccable service started with the welcoming faces and kind words of the front gate guards, and it remained consistently wonderful until the moment we were sent off on our way home with a smile and two bottles of water for the road.  I’ve honestly never encountered a group of people so loyal and willing to do whatever it took to make my stay special in every way.

img_2684

The recent arrival of Jim Justice as the new owner was a turning point for a resort in need of innovation.   Mr. Justice is a legendary West Virginian businessman who saw a unique opportunity to take ownership of his state’s beloved landmark and lead it in a new direction.   Under Mr. Justice’s leadership, there are numerous, exciting changes taking place.  In addition to the recent opening of Prime 44 West, a premier steakhouse honoring Hall of Fame basketball player Jerry West, construction has already begun on an 80,000 square foot casino which will be located underground beneath the front entrance.  The Casino will feature an elegant, Monte Carlo-style decor and is scheduled to open in April 2010.  In the meantime, the resort has opened a smaller, more intimate casino called The Tavern, which will be available for private parties after the bigger casino opens its doors this spring.  Additionally, The Greenbrier recently announced that it will be hosting the PGA tour’s newest event, called The Greenbrier Classic.  Now an official stop on the PGA tour, the resort will have another reason to lure visitors to its historic fairways.

 img_2679

When asked the question, “Who are the best types of clients to send to The Greenbrier?” I tell people the resort offers something for everyone.  It’s perfect for families, multi-generational gatherings, romantic getaways and corporate retreats.  I’m partial to the Spa for its robust menu of services, talented staff, and lovely ambiance, but there are so many other wonderful things to see and do during your stay.  Golf, tennis, bowling, falconry, off-road driving, hiking, swimming (indoor and outdoor), sleigh riding, horseback riding, and white water rafting are just some of the many activities offered.  For the little ones, there is a great children’s program as well.

img_2670

Because of the snowstorm, I had the good fortune of extending my stay for one extra day.  Between the beautiful Christmas decorations, snowy grounds, and fine dining, I was happy to be “stranded!”  Consider this legendary resort for your next special occasion or if you just need to get away for a few days.  Brownell shares a preferred relationship with the hotel, which translates into special amenities when you book through me.  I can’t imagine a better place to spend some downtime in the gracious and pampering hands of a staff who will welcome you back year after year.

Amelia Island, Florida: Southern Charm Meets Coastal Paradise

June 29th, 2009

I just returned from a ten day stay on Amelia Island, which is located 30 miles north of Jacksonville, Florida.  It’s been on my radar screen for years, so I was anxious to check it out for myself and for my clients.  Given the relative ease of getting there and the fact that the island is known to be very family friendly, my husband and I brought along our two small children.

img_1932

Our first stop was the Ritz Carlton Amelia Island, and it did not disappoint!  The service, grounds, dining, spa and activities were fantastic.  The service in particular exceeded my expectations in every way.  I can’t think of anywhere I’ve visited in recent years with such an attentive and friendly staff.

aerial-from-ocean

From the moment we arrived, I felt like a “VIP!”  Additionally, my children were treated as special guests and pampered throughout their stay. The Ritz embraces its youngest guests in remarkable ways I’ve never encountered before at a five star resort.  They seem to have thought of everything - a baby pool shallow enough for the littlest ones, yet filled with entertaining fountains for older toddlers, a fantastic Ritz Kids Camp, and daily activities such as a treasure hunt or hunting for sharks teeth on the beach are just some of the many ways the Ritz caters to children.

img_1947

Our most memorable experience was the pirate tuck-in we arranged.  At  bedtime, there was a knock on our door.  “Princess Amelia,” a pirate and a real parrot entered our room to read the children a bedtime story, and deliver cookies and other special gifts.  My son and daughter loved it!

img_1958

I decided to upgrade to a Club Level room, and I can honestly say it was worth every penny.  Located on the top floor, the elegant yet informal lounge offers four different food presentations daily (all of which were excellent) along with unlimited alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages.   My family ate breakfast and lunch daily there - a big savings when you consider what it would cost to eat each of those meals in one of the hotel’s restaurants.  Additionally, there was a wonderful children’s room adjacent to the Club lounge, which was loaded with toys, children’s videos and comfortable spots for littles ones to relax.

Dining at the Ritz Carlton Amelia Island was top notch.  Salt, their signature oceanfront restaurant, delivered one of the best meals I’ve eaten in a very long time.   It was a great spot for my husband and me to spend some adults-only time in an elegant setting.  I also particularly liked Cafe 4750 for it’s casual atmosphere and lighter fare.  Diners can choose to eat in the restaurant’s lively main dining room or the spacious, outdoor verandah overlooking the ocean.

The spa is brand new and quite impressive.  Over 27,000 square feet in size, it offers a wide array of spa services in a tranquil and chic environment.  Also worth mentioning is the outdoor spa pool - adults only and blissfully peaceful.  Envision plush towels, special pillows and plentiful attendants to cater to your every whim.  It was an amazing, adults-only haven!

More than anything, however, I found the Ritz to be such an incredible place because of the outstanding service.  It was truly “five star” in every way and made our stay so wonderful.  Whether you’re seeking a romantic get-away or a fun-filled family vacation, the Ritz Amelia Island has the right accommodations, programs, facilities and dining options for you.

img_1965

My next stop was Amelia Island Plantation, a 1,350 acre resort and residential community just a few minutes down the road from the Ritz.  The Plantation is bordered by the Atlantic Ocean and Intracoastal waterway, and its vast size translates into numerous accommodation choices for visitors lucky enough to enter its beautiful grounds.  Known for its environmental consciousness, the resort has done an amazing job of preserving the coastal vegetation and habitat .  I was most struck by the magestic live oaks draped in Spanish moss, which thrive everywhere on property.

 img_1974

I selected a two bedroom oceanview villa for my family.  It was well-equipped, spacious and offered fantastic ocean views from our sizable balcony.  Having a kitchen and our own washer and dryer was particularly helpful when traveling with little children.

shipwatch_5001

Outdoor locations to soak up the sun are plentiful by anyone’s standards.  I really liked having the ability to choose where I’d spend my time each day.  My personal favorite spots included the Beach Club pool, the beach in front of our villa complex, and the pool at our villa complex.

aerialinnpool1

Amelia Island Plantation offers a vast array of activities for its guests.  With 72 holes of championship golf available, golf lovers will find themselves in paradise!  23 tennis courts, miles of walking, jogging and biking trails, numerous swimming pools, a children’s park, and a well equipped Health & Fitness Center are just some of the many options offered.

One of the highlights of our stay was a morning spent bike riding as a family.  My husband and son opted for a “ride along” bike, and I pulled my daughter in a comfortable trailer.  We had such a great time exploring Amelia Island Plantation’s beautiful scenery!

img_2023

I highly recommend renting a golf cart for at least a portion of your stay.  Known locally as “Island Hoppers,” they provide convenient transportation and a fun way to see the resort.  Trams run regularly as well, but I preferred having the flexibility to come and go without waiting for a tram to come by.

img_2016

Amelia Island Plantation offers numerous dining options on property.  My dinner at PLaE (which stands for ”People Laughing And Eating”) was my favorite.  The atmosphere and food was excellent.  Additionally, I was a big fan of the Marche Burette, a small deli and grocery store which offers oven brick pizzas, gourmet soups, and sandwiches for lunch and dinner.   The Friday night Boardwalk Bash there was particularly fun - my children loved the free buttery popcorn, and my husband and I enjoyed the $1 beers.  Live music completed the event, which was packed with guests and residents.

The children’s program at the resort is well-organized and offers a variety of great experiences.  My son spent one morning at Kids Camp Amelia and loved the games, crafts and pool time spent with other children his own age.  ”Just For Kids” evening theme parties for ages 3-10 are offered every weekend in the summertime as well.

img_1970

Amelia Island is a great option for families and couples alike.  The miles of wide, unspoiled beaches and excellent resort choices offer something for everyone.  Even better is the ease of getting there - a welcome respite from lengthier and often more hectic international travel.  If you’re looking for true southern charm in a tropical setting, it’s an ideal spot for you!

Mexico’s Hot Spot: The Mexican Riviera

March 19th, 2009

I just returned from a fantastic visit to the Riviera Maya. Otherwise known as the Mexican Riviera, this beautiful stretch of Caribbean coastline is conveniently located 45 minutes south of the Cancun airport. The area is a hot bed of upscale, all-inclusive resorts and several luxury, boutique properties popular with honeymooners and families alike.

My first stop was Occidental’s luxury property, Royal Hideaway. It’s the world’s first adults-only, all-inclusive resort to earn the prestigious AAA 5-Diamond Award. The concept of a luxury, all-inclusive property with gourmet food intrigued me, which is the main reason why I selected to stay at the resort.

Upon arrival, my husband and I entered the elegant lobby and were greeted with cool, fresh scented hand towels and bubbling glasses of champagne. After receiving a helpful overview of the resort and its amenities, we were escorted to our oceanview room. I found the rooms to be on the small side but very sophisticated and well-appointed. I recommend requesting a room in one of the buildings closest to the beach, as Royal Hideaway has a stunning, beach-front pool area where we spent most of our time.

Visitors should be aware that the town of Playacar where Royal Hideaway is located has suffered significant beach erosion as a result of hurricanes. At the moment, there is very little beach and many sandbags scattered along the surf. I was informed prior to arrival and therefore wasn’t surprised by the appearance of the beach. The Mexican government is apparently working on a plan to fix the problem long-term, which is good news for Royal Hideaway and its neighbors along that stretch of beach. In the meantime, however, Royal Hideaway’s chic infinity pools (yes, there are two of them!), attentive poolside staff, beachfront restaurant, and lively atmosphere more than made up for the lack of sand.

The promise of gourmet food coupled with a large emphasis on service proved to be true. Royal Hideaway delivered superb dining night after night. My personal favorite spots were the signature restaurant, Las Ventanas and Japanese inspired, Azia. Additionally, I thoroughly enjoyed lunch at The Deck, a casual bar and grill located right on the ocean.

Royal Hideaway's grounds

Royal Hideaway’s attention to detail and emphasis on customer service was apparent throughout our stay. I was especially impressed by the personal concierge assigned to each building on property. Ricardo greeted us by name each day, wanting to know what he could do to be of assistance. The staff at the pool was eager to bring us drinks whenever we wanted, our room was always cleaned in a timely manner, and the waiters at all of the restaurants were knowledgable and friendly. Additionally, the grounds were quite beautiful and well-maintained. So if you’re looking for an all-inclusive property that truly delivers on luxury, Royal Hideaway is the ideal choice for you!

My next stop: Rosewood Mayakoba, which is spectacular in every way. For travelers who’ve experienced Rosewood’s other Caribbean properties (Caneel Bay, Little Dix Bay, Jumby Bay), you will not be disappointed! I would describe Rosewood Mayakoba as a “wow” property - one of those spots you can’t stop talking about when you return home. Everything exceeded my expectations: the architecture, service, rooms, grounds, dining, and pool/beach services were among the best I’ve experienced anywhere.

Rooms along the lagoon at Rosewood Mayakoba

Rooms along the lagoon at Rosewood Mayakoba

Rosewood Mayakoba is situated along a mile-long stretch of beautiful beach, but it’s honestly not the beach that makes the resort so special. I found the 20 acres of clear lagoons bordered by mangrove jungle to be unique, serene and beautiful. The resort’s architecture is a contemporary-Mexican style, specially designed to blend in with the natural coastal environment. My husband and I opted to stay in the lead-in Lagoon Suite category, and we were more than surprised by its size, luxuriousness and views of the lagoon and surrounding mangroves. The ride to our suite via an elegant private boat was just the beginning. Upon arrival , we quickly discovered that our large suite featured a vast lagoon-side terrace with inviting plunge pool, rooftop sundeck and a bathroom not to be forgotten. In addition to a lovely, outdoor garden shower, it came fully equipped with an enormous circular tub which was transformed into a fantasy of bubbles and flower petals each evening by our personal butler.

Golf carts driven by plentiful staff members circle the property on a regular basis, so guests have no trouble finding a ride to their desired destination when they need one. However, the grounds were so pretty that my husband and I often opted to travel by foot. It was a pleasant walk or ride to the beach area, complete with a “hopping” beach bar/restaurant, infinity pool and fully equipped children’s facility. Back towards the main lobby was an equally appealing atmosphere. I particularly enjoyed the serenity of the pool, which is overlooked by the main dining area. Additionally, Azul is not to be missed. It’s a chic raw bar and “tequila library” which serves excellent ceviche and cocktails, as well as a vast selection of Mexican tequilas.

For spa lovers, Sense, a Rosewood Spa, is sure to please. The 17,000 square foot facility is blissfully located on a separate “island” within the hotel’s grounds. Guests enjoy a wide array of complimentary amenities when they book a spa treatment, including access to a heated pool, juice bar, sauna, steam room, Jacuzzi, cold plunge pool and relaxation areas. A fully equipped gym is also available for all guests to utilize, should they be able to drag themselves away from their suite or the beach to burn a few calories.

Evening at Rosewood Mayakoba

From rooms to service to dining to scenery, Rosewood Mayakoba is a step above the rest. Equally unique is the fact that the resort is a great choice not only for couples seeking a romantic getaway, but also for families. Families of all shapes and size will find themselves very much at home due to the spacious accommodations, attentive staff and impressive children’s programs.

For guests fortunate enough to experience it, Rosewood Mayakoba will call you back again and again. I am already counting down until my next visit….

Round Hill: Elegance and Luxury in Jamaica

January 23rd, 2009

Round Hill, which is located in the Montego Bay area of Jamaica, is one of my favorite Caribbean boutique hotels. The luxurious hotel rooms, which were recently renovated and designed by Ralph Lauren, are all located in The Pineapple House in a central spot within the resort grounds. All 36 of them are oceanfront and decorated in a quintessential Caribbean style. Additionally, there are 27 privately owned villas dotting the hillside.

I recently visited the property and found the resort to be one of the most elegant spots I’d seen in all of the Caribbean. Past guests include a “who’s who” list of celebrities, politicians, entertainers and more. It’s not uncommon to dine beside someone famous, so be on the lookout while you’re there! Ralph Lauren himself owns two private homes on the grounds, as he spends a large amount of time at Round Hill each year.
Looking for a tranquil and sumptuous spa while on vacation? Round Hill’s spa is the the ideal spot to pamper oneself. Guests on route to the spa enjoy a beautiful walk along a secluded path flanked by tropical foliage, only to arrive at a peaceful haven at the top of the hill. The spa treatment menu is extensive and will meet the most discerning spa lover’s needs.

Dining is a special experience at Round Hill. Guests enjoy gourmet meals daily on a romantic waterfront terrace. The atmosphere certainly made me want to linger over a glass of wine for as long as possible. Want to bring the children along? Round Hill caters to families of all ages and offers a robust children’s program for little ones between the ages of 3-12. The entry enrollment age of three is actually quite unusual and a big bonus for parents of very little ones. Most children’s clubs require children to be five years of age before they can participate, so Round Hill provides a nice perk for very young families. Arts, crafts, water sports, etc. are available on a daily basis, and the children I saw on property seemed to be having quite a good time!

For a limited time, Round Hill is offering an excellent deal for Virtuoso clients. I must also add that it’s highly unusual for a property with such an accomplished track record to offer any deals in high season. For travel now until February 12th and again between February 25th-March 5th, guests staying 4 nights pay for 3, 7 nights pay for 5, and 14 nights pay for 10. Additionally, I’m able to secure a $100 food and beverage credit per room. Contact me for more details and availability information.

A Hidden Gem: The Jamaica Inn

January 10th, 2009

One of my favorite Caribbean boutique hotels is the five-star Jamaica Inn, which is tucked away on a stunning beachfront spot in Ocho Rios. The hotel has been around since 1950 and maintains an old world, Caribbean charm difficult to find in the region today. Known for outstanding service, ambience and dining, the Jamaica Inn has an incredibly high number of repeat visitors. And the hotel has received many accolades to prove it, including a #1 ranking for all hotels in Jamaica and #7 in the entire Caribbean awarded by Conde Nast readers in 2008.

The Jamaica Inn offers a high level of luxury at a price point much lower than many of its competitors. And as a Virtuoso advisor, I’m able to secure a number of perks for my clients, including a room upgrade at the time of arrival (subject to availability), complimentary continental breakfast daily, and a complimentary bottle of fine Jamaican rum.

The hotel consists of 47 suites, all with water views. Each suite has either a private balcony or large verandah, which are fully furnished with comfortable furniture for relaxing and taking in the views. The suites have a breezy and open feel to them, and they’re decorated in a beautiful, Caribbean plantation style. The Jamaica Inn believes its guests deserve an opportunity to truly escape from the real world, so televisions, radios and clocks are blissfully absent from every suite on property.

For spa lovers, the Jamaica Inn offers its full-service KiYara Ocean Spa. Located directly on the water, the spa celebrates Jamaican nature in all of its treatments. Local plants, both those gathered in the wild and those provided by Jamaican farmers, are plentifully used. One tip: it’s a good idea to book your spa treatments before arrival to ensure you get what you want at the desired times.

Honeymoon? Anniversary? Or just a romantic getaway? A perfect spot for lovers of all ages…The Jamaica Inn.

The Power of Virtuoso

December 28th, 2008
“What is Virtuoso?” It’s a question often asked by new clients and people who are unfamiliar with the world of luxury travel. Virtuoso is a prestigious, by-invitation-only network of the industry’s best travel agencies and travel providers worldwide. In total, there are only 300 Virtuoso agencies in the country, and Sterling Brownell (my firm) is one of them.

As a Virtuoso advisor, I leverage this exclusive network to bring tangible value to my clients. Complimentary upgrades, special amenities, privileged access and invitations to private events are just a few of the perks I’m able to deliver to my clients because of my affiliation with Virtuoso.

So when I’m asked the question of how booking travel with me is different from going online and doing it yourself, I simply answer “The power of Virtuoso.” Here’s an example of that power and the value it brings to consumers savvy enough to work with a Virtuoso advisor:

The Sanctuary at Kiawah Island Golf Resort on Kiawah Island, South Carolina

Pay for 2 nights and receive the 3rd night free

The Sanctuary at Kiawah Island Golf Resort on Kiawah Island, South Carolina is a Mobil Five Star oceanfront resort and spa located off the coast of Charleston. The hotel feels like a seaside mansion and captures the true essence of the beautiful south. It is an ideal getaway for both families and couples, and it offers a wide array of activities both on and off the beach. World class golf, tennis, dining, and a gorgeous spa are just a few of the ways guests can enjoy their time while staying at the Sanctuary.

Between now and March 4, 2009, clients booking through a Virtuoso advisor pay for two nights and receive the third night complimentary. It is an excellent deal and just one example of the many ways that Virtuoso advisors deliver exceptional value to their clients.

Why Rent a Villa in the Caribbean?

December 19th, 2008

In search of that perfect home away from home when traveling to the Caribbean? Then renting a villa might be the best choice for you. With an abundance of homes available for rent on many different islands, there’s a property out there to fit any family or group. Having access to a fully stocked kitchen, enjoying larger living spaces and splashing around in your own private pool are just a few of the benefits of choosing to stay in a villa. Many homes also come fully staffed with cooks, butlers, and babysitters if you’re looking for the ultimate pampered experience.

The key to selecting the perfect Caribbean villa for your vacation is determining how much space you need to comfortably accommodate your group, as well as choosing the right island and location on that island based on your personal preferences. A trusted travel advisor is the best person to help you sort through these issues and find a reputable rental company. While the internet is full of “book on your own” options, there’s no way to know who is legitimate and who isn’t. My firm has access to an elite group of excellent villa companies who will deliver a product that is worth the price.

The islands of the Caribbean are much more diverse than many people realize. Some of them such as Anguilla and Eleuthera are relatively flat with stunning white sand beaches. On islands like these, most villas are located directly on the beach. Jamaica, Grenada and St. Barts are examples of lush and mountainous islands where one can find villas both on the beach and in the hills with spectacular ocean views.

Contact me for assistance with locating the best island and villa for your next tropical getaway.

Boston Getaway

December 16th, 2008

I recently spent a weekend in Boston to celebrate the marriage of an old friend. I began my weekend by checking into the historic and beauitful Fairmont Copley Plaza hotel. After an extensive renovation and restoration, the hotel is truly gorgeous. It was originally built in 1912, and guests feel as if they are stepping back into a bygone era of elegance and splendor as soon as they enter its doors.

cop031_oval_room11

I opted for a Fairmont Gold level room, which is located on the fourth floor of the hotel. “Fairmont Gold” is the equivalent of a club level room at other properties, but Fairmont goes above and beyond to deliver value for the modest additional cost. My husband and I were immediately directed to the private check-in desk on the Fairmont Gold floor and received a warm and personalized welcome from the staff. We had arrived just in time for afternoon hors d’ouevres in the private lounge. I couldn’t believe how many different treats were offered!

cop025_gold_lounge11

In addition to a fully stocked honor bar, Fairmont Gold guests can take advantage of complimentary coffee, tea, juices, soft drinks and bottled water throughout the day. Breakfast was complimentary as well…and it did not disappoint! Everything from eggs to smoked salmon to fresh fruit was offered, along with fresh pastries, meats, cheeses, etc. After lingering over my delicious breakfast, I made my way to one of the available computers to catch up on emails, all complimentary as part of my Fairmont Gold room rate.

img_14261

The next morning, I toured the Boston Public Library, one of the most interesting buildings in the city from an architectural standpoint. It was located directly across the street from my hotel, which made my visit there particularly convenient. I took in a fascinating photography exhibit before heading out to explore more of the city via the Freedom Trail. Marked with special red bricks, the trail covers sixteen different sites which are most important to the American Revolution. I opted to explore the Trail on my own, but costumed and audio guides are available for those who are interested.

img_13681

One of my favorite stops was The Boston Common, our country’s oldest park. After a visit to Faneuil Hall, a structure which has served as an open forum meeting hall and marketplace for over 250 years, my husband, friends and I made our way to The Salty Dog for lunch. It offered lots of local, fresh seafood along with some of the city’s traditional dishes such as Boston Creme Pie. My lobster sandwich was divine! In the afternoon, the men headed back to the Oak Room at the Fairmont Copley Plaza for a drink, while the ladies visited Newbury Street for shopping. Newbury Street offers block after block of small boutiques and restaurants - it is a shoppers haven!

The next day, I took a tour of the USS Constitution, more fondly known as “Old Ironsides.” She’s the oldest commissioned warship afloat in the world, and the tour was fascinating. The ship dates back to 1797 and played a critical role in many battles fought to preserve our country’s freedom. Also located at the Charlestown Navy Yard was a very educational USS Constitution Museum. I stayed there quite awhile, reacquainting myself with much of our country’s history I’d forgotten since my school age years. Both the museum and the USS Constitution herself are must-see spots for anyone visiting Boston. While in the area, we also ventured to the top of the Bunker Hill Monument. It is a trek straight up of 294 steps but worth the effort given the expansive view of the city which rewards those who make it to the top.

The remainder of the weekend was spent enjoying wedding festivities, and I left Boston Sunday morning with wonderful memories of a vibrant and historic city offering a little bit of something for everyone.
